A.M. Cassandre

Adolphe Jean-Marie Mouron or A.M.Cassandre was born in 1901 in Kharkov, Ukraine to French parents. In 1915 his family settled in Paris where he completed his schooling at the Écoles des Beaux-Arts, studying painting. At the age of 22, he started creating posters using stencils and an airbrush. His work celebrates the luxurious transport and the latest machine technology of his day, drawing upon the styles of Cubism and Futurism. Cassandre's work is typically Art Deco and typifies the classic design style of the late 1920s to the mid-1930s. In 1926, Cassandre co-founded advertising agency Alliance Graphique responsible for creating many of the classic designs of the 20th century which evoked a particularly French style that characterised the Parisian lifestyle. Cassandre died in Paris in 1968.
