Ryuijie Douglas
Ryuijie Douglas was born in 1950 in Otaru, Japan. As part of a Military family, they moved a lot when Ryuijie was a young child, firstly to the USA and subsequently to various places, including Hawaii and New Hampshire, until his father's retirement. Throughout his childhood, Ryuijie had shown a natural interest in art and his talent began to emerge during his military service. While posted in Guam, he mastered underwater photography while enjoying his interest in scuba diving. Returning to the USA after completing his tour, he attended college and began a successful career in lithography. This collection of images features botanicals frozen in blocks of ice photographed in black and white with a large format camera. Ryuijie explores the Japanese principle of wabi-sabi; beauty in nature in all of its imperfections. He has pursued his photographic vision for over thirty years, acquiring a reputation for his exquisite work, inspired by the natural world.
