Jean Guichard

Jean Guichard was born in 1952, Paris. He has always travelled, and his experiences on these journeys have been hugely influential on his photography. Carrying out his military service with the French Navy in 1971, Jean was first introduced to the extremely violent Great North seas. Selling his photos to fellow crew members while travelling through Greenland allowed him to buy his first Nikon camera. After his career as a photojournalist and working 12 years in the industry, Jean and some colleagues created the GLMR agency. At this time Jean's love of shooting lighthouses became apparent. Lighthouse keepers would risk their lives to guide ships through ferocious waters, and Jean wanted to tell the story of the forgotten lighthouse keepers. His Lighthouse series perfectly illustrates the power of the high seas and fortitude of both lighthouse and keeper.
